If your teen needs braces but doesn’t like the look of them, Invisalign® clear aligners are a great alternative. Clear aligners like Invisalign® work to straighten teeth just like metal braces but without all the wires and brackets. Invisalign® works gently over time to move teeth into place, just like braces do, but without the obvious “look” of braces. This is done through clear plastic trays that fit over the teeth. The trays are replaced every few weeks as treatment progresses. Invisalign® clear aligners are comfortable and attractive – many people won’t even notice your teen is wearing them!
Invisalign® clear aligners work very similarly to braces and treat pretty much the same orthodontic conditions. Your teenager may be most concerned about aesthetics and will want Invisalign® clear aligners to fix crooked, uneven teeth or teeth with large gaps between them. Invisalign® can also be used to fix overcrowding of the teeth. Besides creating a beautiful smile, Invisalign® clear aligners also fix functional problems of the teeth and bite, including overbites, underbites, and open bites.
Invisalign® clear aligners have many benefits over traditional metal braces. First, they are very comfortable compared to braces – no worries about metal wires coming loose and hurting the mouth! Second, they are much easier to care for because you can remove them to clean them. And because Invisalign® clear aligners are removable, your teen can take them out before eating, so they can continue to eat all the foods they love.
While Invisalign® clear aligners have many positive benefits for teens, one of the main concerns parents have is whether their teen will wear them consistently. Invisalign® clear aligners should be worn all the time, except when eating, brushing, and flossing. If you have a teen who may be less compliant, you may need to discuss with them metal braces as an alternative.
Teens may sometimes not be honest about how much they are wearing their clear aligners. Fortunately, Invisalign® has a solution to this problem. Their Invisalign® trays for teens have a blue dot on the inside that cannot be seen when the aligner is being worn. Like a usage marker on a toothbrush, the blue dot will fade in a consistent manner when worn properly. This way, we can monitor whether the teen is wearing their clear aligners as often as they should. If not, we can discuss alternatives. However, most teens will understand the importance of wearing their Invisalign® clear aligners and, knowing that they will be monitored, develop good habits.
Traditional metal braces often need to be worn for one to three years. Invisalign® clear aligners are similar in terms of time, and treatment time will vary based on your teen’s unique case. Each set of clear aligner trays is worn for two weeks prior to your teen “graduating” to the next set.
